Indiana State University has announced the naming of the E. Daniel and Sue Reinhard Family Safety, Health, and Environment Lab in the Bailey College of Engineering and Technology, recognizing a significant contribution from alumnus Dan Reinhard and his family.
Located in Room 221 of the newly renovated facility, the lab will support students in the university’s Safety Management program—soon to be known as the Safety, Health and Environment program—while also enhancing hands-on learning and industry-relevant training opportunities. The renovated building, including this lab, is scheduled for completion later in 2026.
Reinhard, a 1968 Indiana State graduate and Terre Haute native, was the first student in the university’s environmental health program. His career spanned more than three decades with the U.S. Navy, including leadership roles focused on environmental, safety, and occupational health initiatives across the Department of Defense.
“Today’s announcement reflects the power of philanthropy to transform student experiences,” said Indiana State University President Mike Godard. “The Reinhard family’s generosity will provide our students with access to state-of-the-art learning environments and prepare them to make meaningful contributions in fields that protect lives and strengthen communities.”
In addition to the lab naming, this gift establishes the Reinhard Family Safety Scholarship and provides ongoing support for the academic program, helping recruit and retain students while funding equipment, training, and other critical resources.
“This investment directly enhances the way our students learn,” said Dr. Divya Choudhary, dean of the Bailey College of Engineering and Technology. “The Safety, Health and Environment Lab will serve as a hub for applied learning, giving students the opportunity to develop the technical skills and real-world experience that employers desire.”
Reinhard credits his time at Indiana State—and the mentorship that introduced him to the field—for shaping his career path.
“Indiana State opened the door to a career I had never imagined,” said Reinhard. “I am honored to give back and support students pursuing this important work, and our hope is that they build meaningful careers focused on protecting the health and safety of others.”
The naming also honors the Reinhard family’s commitment to education and service, ensuring their legacy will continue through future generations of Sycamores.
“We are incredibly grateful to Dan and his family for their vision and generosity,” said Andrea Angel, Vice President for University Advancement and CEO of the Indiana State University Foundation. “Their support not only strengthens our academic programs but also creates opportunities for students to succeed and lead in essential, high-impact careers.”
The E. Daniel and Sue Reinhard Family Safety, Health, and Environment Lab will serve as a key resource for students preparing to enter careers dedicated to workplace safety, environmental stewardship, and public health—fields that play a vital role in communities across the nation.
