Indiana State University celebrated the dedication of the Bobbie O’Neill Gross Motor Skills Room on April 24, recognizing the generosity and lasting impact of Bobbie and Tim O’Neill on students preparing for careers in early childhood education.
Established in 2026, the Bobbie O’Neill Gross Motor Skills Room honors the O’Neills’ enduring commitment to Indiana State and their investment in the next generation of educators. Located within the Jan McCarthy Early Childhood Education Center, the space supports hands-on learning for students studying early childhood education while also serving young learners through developmentally focused instruction and activity.
Bobbie O’Neill, a 1972 Indiana State graduate in elementary education, built her career around helping children develop strong foundations in their earliest years of learning. As a student, she was inspired by the mentorship of Dr. Jan McCarthy, whose guidance helped shape Bobbie’s passion for early childhood education. During her time on campus, Bobbie gained early classroom experience teaching 4- and 5-year-olds at the Laboratory School—an experience that helped launch a distinguished career dedicated to young learners.
Tim O’Neill, who graduated from Indiana State in 1969 with a degree in marketing, went on to a successful career in banking while remaining deeply engaged with his alma mater. A dedicated Sycamore, he has served Indiana State as a member of the Board of Trustees, the Alumni Association Board, and as an emeritus director of the Foundation Board. In 2007, he was recognized with the University’s Distinguished Alumni Award for his leadership and service.
Together, the O’Neills have remained steadfast supporters of Indiana State University and its students. Their philanthropy established the Bobbie and Tim O’Neill Early Childhood Education Fund, which provides scholarship support for students studying elementary education with a minor in early childhood education. The fund reflects their shared commitment to expanding opportunity for future educators while honoring the legacy of mentorship and excellence that shaped Bobbie’s own journey.
The naming of the Bobbie O’Neill Gross Motor Skills Room was approved by the Indiana State University Board of Trustees on February 20, 2026, formalizing a tribute to two alumni whose generosity continues to strengthen Indiana State and the students it serves.
