Indiana State University paid tribute to the legacy of Dr. Deborah J. Curtis, its twelfth president and the institution’s first female president, with the unveiling of her official presidential portrait. The event served as a reflection on her tenure and enduring commitment to Sycamore success.
The unveiling took place Thursday, June 24, in the McKee Family Heritage Lounge. Among those offering remarks were Mr. Robert Casey, Chair of the Indiana State University Board of Trustees, and Mr. John Pratt, Vice Chair of the Board. The portrait was created by Indianapolis-based artist Ms. Rita Spalding.
Following the unveiling, the university continued a cherished tradition that began in 1992 — the presentation of the William Albert Jones Medals. Named in honor of the institution’s first president, the medals recognize individuals who have offered distinguished counsel and support to the presidency.
In a moving ceremony, Dr. Curtis conferred the honors upon a select group of individuals who were instrumental during her presidency. The recipients represent alumni, faculty, staff, community leaders, and friends of the university who exemplify dedication, insight, and partnership.
The 2025 William Albert Jones Medal recipients were Andrea Angel, Dr. Andrea Arrington-Sirois, Steve & Gloria Bailey, Larry & Buffy Boulet, Darren Brucken M.D., Paul & Susan Chaney, Don Dudine, Dr. Timothy Hawkins, Sumalayo Jackson, Rex Kendall, Diann McKee, Dr. Christopher Olsen, Kay Ponsot, Dr. Nancy Rogers, Tamara Shike, Dr. Michele Soliz, Joyce Thompson-Mills, and Roxanne Torrence.
Each honoree was recognized not only for their contributions to the university, but also for their steadfast support of Dr. Curtis’ mission to uplift students, strengthen community partnerships, and advance philanthropy.
