Indiana State University on Thursday rededicated Dreiser Hall, which had an $18-million, state-funded renovation.

Speakers were ISU President Dr. Deborah J. Curtis, Provost Dr. Christopher Olsen, and Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences Dr. Melinda Roberts.

Dreiser, home of Student Media and the Department of Theater, was constructed in 1950 and contains 52,000 square feet. It never had a total renovation and many of the building systems and finishes were original.

The renovation transformed it into a modern teaching facility, with dramatically improved learning spaces. A 100-seat theater in the building has been enhanced.

"(Students) now have these outstanding faciltiies and state-of-the-art equipment to use for amazing, hands-on experiences right here on campus," ISU President Dr. Deborah J. Curtis said.

Additional glass improves natural light and views of campus. A new northwest entrance gives the building an entrance-exit near Dede Fountain.

Dreiser was compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act but in need of upgrades. Those included a new elevator and other ADA improvements throughout the building.

Curtis thanked Governor Eric Holcomb and local legislators Senator Jon Ford, Representative Bob Heaton, Representative Alan Morrison, and Representative Tonya Pfaff. She also thanked Terre Haute mayor Duke Bennett, who was present at the ceremony. Hannig Construction of Terre Haute was the general contractor.

A sculpture, called Emanating Connections, was moved from outside in front of ISU’s New Theater to inside Dreiser Hall. It is by renowned sculptor Chakaia Booker, who is famous for creating abstract works from recycled tires and stainless steel.
