The Donald W. Scott College of Business at Indiana State University will host a reception Tuesday to welcome Sandeep Gopalan, head of the department of law at the National University of Ireland and a visiting scholar with ISU's Networks Financial Institute.
"We are fortunate to have attracted Dr. Gopalan to ISU to share his passion and scholarship with members of our campus and community," said Terrie Troxel, executive director of Networks Financial Institute.
Gopalan is the first visiting scholar the institute has arranged since the relocating its headquarters to Terre Haute.
During the 2010-2011 academic year, Gopalan will be in residence on the Indiana campus in three two-month periods working with students and Scott College faculty to enhance curriculum. He will also conduct research in financial services law, regulation and public policy issues. Some of his projects have already begun, including an evaluation of the role of ethics training in business.
"I hope to facilitate the development of law courses in the curriculum, create opportunities for ISU students to study abroad in Ireland and the U.K., contribute to the development of an intellectual community at ISU and participate in the wider legal community in Indiana," Gopalan said. "ISU is an excellent institution with tremendous potential for reputational growth and I am thrilled to be here at a time when good things are happening."
A former Rhodes Scholar at Queen's College, Oxford, Gopalan achieved his doctorate from Oxford University and has taught in the United Kingdom and the United States. He worked as a lawyer in California and as a Wall Street investment banker.
Gopalan's editorials have been published in the New York Times, the Washington Times, the Irish Times and the Wall Street Journal, among others. He has authored many essays, academic articles and textbooks.
Networks Financial Institute and the Scott College of Business are increasing their commitment to research by hosting visiting scholars, Troxel said. Two additional visiting scholars are scheduled to come to Indiana State this academic year.
