On Tuesday, March 17, a researcher of the physiological, ecological and evolutionary factors contributing to behavioral variation will speak at Indiana State University as part of the Biology Seminar Series: "From Molecules to Ecosystems."
Rosemary Knapp, an associate professor of zoology at the University of Oklahoma, will speak at 4 p.m. in room 12 of the Science Building. Knapp will speak about the evolution of behavior in bluegill fish in a seminar titled, "Behavioral Endocrinology of Alternative Reproductive Tactics in Bluegill: Correlated Characters in Physiological and Evolutionary Time."Â Knapp's research has an ultimate aim of increasing understanding of how behavior evolves.
Knapp earned her bachelors in biology from Cook College, Rutgers University in 1984 and went on to get her masters in zoology at the University of Madison-Wisconsin. In 1996, Knapp received her Ph.D. in zoology from Arizona State University. In addition to teaching zoology, Knapp currently serves as a member of the Oklahoma Center for Neuroscience, and is an associate editor for Hormones and Behavior, the publication for the Society for Behavioral Neuroendocrinology. She also serves as the director of graduate studies for the zoology department at the University of Oklahoma.
The series, sponsored by the ISU department of biology and St. Mary-of-the-Woods College science and math department, brings in internationally recognized research scientists to speak to students and community members. On March 24, the Life Science Speaker, Mervin Yoder, from IUPUI will speak at ISU. Yoder graduated from ISU in 1976 with his master's degree and received an ISU Distinguished Alumni Award in 2008. On March 31, the Women in Science Speaker, Amy Parish, will speak about, "Sex, Bonding and Dominance in Bonobos: What we can learn from studying our closest relative." The series is sponsored by St. Mary-of-the-Woods-College, the ISU School of Graduate Studies, the First Year Programs, and the Lilly Endowment.
