Terre Haute, IN - The Indiana State University Department of Art is pleased to announce the Fall Graduate Thesis Exhibitions, on display from Nov. 27-Dec. 1 in the University Art Gallery. These presentations, featuring works by Stephanie Frasier, Karen Page and Elena Rakochy, will be the culmination of several years of artistic work and research at Indiana State and marks the beginning of their professional careers.
The public is invited to attend a reception honoring these artists on Friday, Dec. 1 from 5 to 7 p.m
Frasier, from Evansville, received a BS in Graphic Design from the University of Evansville, where she now teaches. She will receive an M.F.A. in Graphic Design. During her graduate studies at ISU she has explored the topic of colorblindness and the issues it raises. This led her to develop an educational kit on colorblindness targeting early elementary teachers and their students, hoping to create greater awareness and acceptance. She will be exhibiting the kit as well as other works from the past two years.
Page, from Terre Haute, received a B.S. at Hardin-Simmons College in Abilene,Texas, and will receive an M.F.A. in Photography from ISU. She will be exhibiting color photographs which explore rhythm in nature. While acknowledging that rhythm is more obvious in music than in visual art, she seeks to make it inherent to her images, as something that is both seen and felt. Her belief is that, for the visually impaired it is possible to feel the rhythm in her works, even if the exact image cannot be perceived.
Rakochy, originally from Evanston, Ill., received a B.A. from Knox College in Galesburg, IL, and will be receiving an M.F.A. in Ceramics from ISU. She views her ceramic sculptures as physical manifestations of the thought patterns that direct her life's decisions, as abstractions of her chosen path.
The University Art Gallery is open to the public Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. and Thursday from 11 a.m. - 8 p.m. All gallery events are free and open to the public and the facility is wheelchair accessible. The University Art Gallery is host to an outstanding schedule of exhibitions featuring modern and contemporary art and is dedicated to educating and exposing the University and its surrounding community to the visual arts.
