TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - On Thursday, Nov. 16, the Indiana State University Symphony Orchestra will join the worldwide celebrations of two important musical milestones -- the 250th anniversary of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's birth, and the 100th anniversary of Dmitri Shostakovich's birth -- with a concert at 7:30 p.m. in Tilson Auditorium.
The University Symphony, under the baton of William Davis, will open the program with Mozart's overture to his early opera "Lucio Silla." This unusual overture is distinguished by three "mini" movements, in the fast-slow-fast arrangement so common in works from earlier musical periods. Soprano Sara Lueken, a senior from Huntingburg and a winner of the 2006 Paul W. Hagan Concerto/Aria Auditions, will join the orchestra in "Donde lieta", from Puccini's opera "La BohèÂÂ¥."
The concert will conclude with Dmitri Shostakovich's "Symphony #5." Written during a crackdown by Stalin of "decadent, bourgeois" music that did not meet with the approved Soviet style, Shostakovich's musical genius allowed him to slip in a work that met with official approval while not compromising his standards, and actually containing musical ?protests? of the oppression of the Soviet people.
The concert is free and open to the public. For more information, call 237-2772.
