The Catacoustic Consort-Renaissance Music Duo, featuring Annalisa Pappano and Joanna Blendulf, will perform Saturday, Oct. 28 at 7:30 p.m. in the Recital Hall of Indiana State University's Center for Performing and Fine Arts.
The Catacoustic Consort performs a variety of vocal and instrumental music from Renaissance chamber music to Baroque opera, with the intent of recreating the sound of the music when it was originally performed. The music is performed on period instruments such as the viola da gamba, theorbo, organ, harpsichord, Baroque guitar, and lute. In addition to a historically informed approach to performing music, Catacoustic is dedicated to approaching music with an understanding of the life and times of when it was originally played, including an informed humanities presentation to accompany its programs. Some of the composers of early music include J.S. Bach, William Byrd, Giulio Caccini, and Boismortier.
Catacoustic released their award winning Italian Dramatic Laments program on CD internationally in January 2006 on the Naxos label.
Pappano, who serves as artistic director, is a highly sought after performer of the lirone, pardessus, and viola da gamba. She has performed throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe. Pappano has been recognized for bringing together the best talent to present groundbreaking programs and landmark performances.
Blendulf has performed as soloist and continuo player in leading period-instrument ensembles throughout the United States. Blendulf holds performance degrees from the Cleveland Institute of Music and Indiana University, where she studied with Stanley Ritchie, Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi and Alan Harris. In 1998, she was awarded the prestigious Performer's Certificate for her accomplishments on baroque cello from Indiana University. Blendulf was a principal cellist of The New World Symphony under Michael Tilson-Thomas and has also performed with the Atlanta Symphony. She is currently performing with the New York Collegium, Apollo's Fire, American Bach Soloists, the Portland Baroque Orchestra, American Baroque, Musica Angelica (Los Angeles), Camerata Pacifica Baroque (Santa Barbara) and the Benevolent Order for Music of the Baroque. She was named runner-up in the 2000 Early Music America/Dorian Competition for her recording of the complete cello sonatas of Jean Zewalt Triemer. Blendulf's summer engagements have included performances at the Bloomington, Boston, Berkeley Early Music Festivals, the Aspen Music Festival as well as the Carmel Bach Festival.
