Indiana State University will recognize four graduating seniors with the Hines Memorial Medal during spring commencement May 9 at Hulman Center.
Named after Linnaeus Hines, who served as the fourth president of Indiana State from 1921 to 1933, the medal is awarded to students with the highest cumulative grade-point average during the pursuit of a bachelor\'s degree at Indiana State.
Kaitlyn Ann Belter of Batesville is graduating with a bachelor\'s degree in elementary education.
During her years at Indiana State, Belter was involved with the Honors Program, Golden Key National Honor Society and was a National Collegiate Scholar. Her community engagement included the Homecoming designated walker program and Donaghy Day.
Belter has consistently worked toward her goal of becoming an elementary school teacher through practicum, tutoring and student teaching involvement. She job shadowed and was an intern for Focus Indiana in 2013-14 and was a summer school and latchkey program assistant for Batesville Primary School in 2014. She went on to participate in the Teachers of Tomorrow Advancing Learning intensive internship program in 2014 and began student teaching this year at the school.
Belter earned 10 scholarships during her time at Indiana State, including the Academic Distinction Scholarship, the Norma Grosjean Scholarship in Education and the Israel H. and Amanda L. Love Memorial Scholarship.
Belter attended Batesville High School and is the daughter of Gary and Carmen Belter. After graduation, she would like to teach in kindergarten through 6th grade in or near her hometown.
Ashley Haack of Westville is completing bachelor\'s degrees in criminology and psychology.
A recipient of the university\'s Honors Scholarship and a participant in the Honors Program, she received the Richard G. Landini Outstanding Junior Award in 2013.
Her collegiate involvement includes being chair of Union Board community service committee, InterVarsity Christian Fellowship leadership team, president of Aikido Club and secretary of Lambda Alpha Epsilon. Other organizations in which she was active include Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society, Psi Chi Honor Society, National Society of Collegiate Scholars and the National Society of Leadership and Success.
While attending Indiana State, Haack worked with library cataloging as a technical services student assistant. She was also a summer intern with Mission Indy in 2014 and served as a Sycamore Service Corps (AmeriCorps) member.
Haack attended Westville High School and is the daughter of Henry and Tara Haack. After graduation, Haack will attend Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne to pursue a Master of Arts degree in deaconess studies. In the future, she would like to counsel at-risk and delinquent youth and possibly coach basketball.
Becca Muick of Chesterton is graduating with a bachelor\'s degree in management information systems and a minor in operations and supply chain management.
At Indiana State, Muick was inducted into Alpha Lambda Delta. Her other honor society memberships include the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, Golden Key International Honor Society and Beta Gamma Sigma, an international business honor society, Beta Gamma Sigma. She is also media relations officer for the university\'s APICS chapter.
Muick graduated from Chesterton Senior High School and is the daughter of Brain and Theresa Muick.
After graduation, she plans to pursue a career in either user interface design and analysis or information technology management and hopes to run her own business someday.
Evan Rush of Bloomfield is graduating with a degree in chemistry and minors in civic leadership and biology. The son of Michael and Betty Rush, he is a graduate of Bloomfield High School.
Rush is an Eagle Scout and a Rural Health Scholar. He job shadowed physicians for 100 hours during the summer of 2013, tutored in the Chemistry Help Center and Organic Chemistry Lab and studied abroad in Finland.
He participated in Alternative Spring Break trips from 2012 to 2015. He has been a member of Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Terre Haute since 2012. He has also participated in the Summer Undergraduate Research Experience program and has served as a Resident Assistant. He said that position, in which he serves his peers in student housing, has been his most meaningful experience at Indiana State.
Rush has been accepted to the Indiana University School of Medicine as a member of the rural health track. After completing medical school, he is interested in pursuing surgery or endocrinology.
