Indiana State University\'s Symphonic Band will perform a concert of \"Hope and Peace,\" featuring the music of eight distinctive composers at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21 in Tilson Auditorium. The concert will also feature the Indiana State University Sycamore Singers.
Doug Keiser, the associate director of bands and conductor of the symphonic band, explains that this concert \"pays tribute to all those who lost their lives in acts of violence over the last several years, expresses support for the youth in our community and all those who work to achieve peace, and honors the triumph of the spirit of peace and over senseless violent acts.\"
Works performed on the first half of the program will include \"The Quest for Peace\" by Philip Sparke, which pays tribute to the diplomatic efforts of Adlai Stevenson as US Ambassador to the United Nations, particularly in the Cuban Missile Crisis. \"An American Elegy\" by Frank Ticheli was written after the Columbine shootings in 1999 and is a statement of hope in the face of tragic school shootings.
On the second half of the program, Andrew Boysen Jr.\'s \"Grant Them Eternal Rest\" will remember the victims and survivors of the 9/11 attack. The ISU Sycamore Singers will be featured on \"Homeward Bound\" by Marta Keen, which is commonly used as an anthem for veterans returning from overseas. The final featured piece of the concert will be 1812 Overture by Peter Tchaikovsky, which celebrates the triumph of peace over conflict.
