Indiana State University's fall enrollment figures show the number of new freshmen increased by a record setting 33 percent. The university has a total student head count of 11,494, a more than 9 percent increase from the fall 2009 enrollment of 10,534.

"We are pleased and proud to report that we have welcomed the largest incoming class in the 145-year history of Indiana State University," said ISU President Dan Bradley. "But we didn't stop there. We also welcomed back more returning students and are happy to say that more graduate students are choosing Indiana State to complete advanced degrees."

The number of new freshman stands at 2,707, an increase of 672 students from last year. The number of new transfer students, 790, and new graduate students, 499, also rose. New students joined 7,498 existing students who returned to Indiana State this fall, a 3 percent increase from 2009. Graduate student enrollment stands at 2,121 and is a new record.

"These milestones in enrollment have been achieved thanks to the collective efforts of people from across the university - faculty, staff, students and administrators. I am privileged to work with so many talented, creative and dedicated colleagues," said John Beacon, vice president for enrollment management, marketing and communications.

Geographic highlights for Indiana State this fall include Marion County, which sent 404 new students to Terre Haute, an increase of 66 percent from last year, and Illinois, with 271 new students enrolled this fall, a 126 percent increase. Growth in Illinois is likely due to more aggressive recruiting in the development of secondary markets such as the Chicago metropolitan area, Beacon said.

"The number of new students receiving all types of scholarships indicates that Indiana State continues to attract high-achieving students," said Sarah Wurtz, coordinator of university scholarships.

"We had more students than ever accept our invitation to interview for the President's Scholarship and other top awards," Wurtz said. ISU welcomed welcome 224 new honors students this fall, a 72 percent increase from 2009, and awarded 1,252 laptop computers to new students with a minimum grade point average of 3.0 or higher, a 59 percent increase in ISU Laptop Award recipients.

"Through such initiatives as ‘College Go! Week,' the Indiana Commission for Higher Education has helped draw attention to the need for more students to complete a college degree. This initiative last October provided us with a core pool of applicants that served as part of the foundation for Indiana State's recruiting efforts," said Richard Toomey, executive director of admissions. "We are pleased to once again support ‘College Go! Week'."
During this year's "College Go! Week," Sept. 20-24, Indiana State will waive its normal application fee for high school seniors.

High school students and others planning to start or continue their higher education are invited to visit the Indiana State campus. Upcoming Sycamore Preview Days are Sept. 25, Oct. 11 and Nov. 11.

Registration for Sycamore Preview Days or more information about Indiana State is available by calling 1-800-GO-TO-ISU or by visiting the Office of Admissions Web site at http://www.indstate.edu/admissions.
