Indiana State University’s Student Academic Services Center recognized students for academic excellence at its annual Honors Convocation Wednesday (April 2).
Each year, two individuals are selected for the Star Student Award, presented in recognition for the recipients’ hard work and dedication. Star Students achieve academic excellence by utilizing the services the center offers.
This year’s recipients are Michaela Collins of Columbus and Darwin Brack of Cincinnati.
A 2007 graduate of Columbus North High School, Collins is a freshman communication studies major at ISU with a public relations concentration. She is the daughter of Mike and Becky Collins.
“I have worked so hard while I have been at Indiana State, and it is a wonderful feeling to know that all of my efforts have finally paid off,†Collins said.
Brack graduated from Walnut Hills High School in 2007 and is a freshman psychology major at Indiana State. He is the son of Virgil and Donna Brack.
Brack explained that his high school motto was “Sursum ad summum,†meaning “Rise to the highest,†and he intends to do exactly that while attending ISU. Being recognized with the Star Student Award highlights Brack’s achievements in his reach thus far, and he thanked his parents for always encouraging him to do well.
Carly Robbins of Rosedale, a graduate of Riverton Parke High School in 2005, and now a junior political science major at ISU, was honored with the Lumina Scholar Award.
Robbins, the daughter of Nancy Wright and Keith Robbins, was selected from approximately 50 nominations from various departments on campus. The Lumina Scholar Award recognizes a student who possesses self-reliance, leadership skills, an admirable academic record and a positive connection with the university.
“I am very excited to have been selected as the last Lumina Scholar and am proud to be recognized for my hard work at ISU. I look forward to representing my school well in all my future endeavors,†Robbins said.
This the second and final year for the Lumina Scholar Award and Catherine Baker, director of the Student Academic Services Center, thanked the Lumina Foundation for allowing the center to provide programming for scholars above and beyond what is already available through the foundation’s generous grant.
During the convocation, the center also presented awards for the Honor Roll, Dean’s List and the 4.0 Club, giving more than 200 ISU students the opportunity to shine in recognition of their hard work and dedication.
“The SASC is very proud of the academic record of its students and is very pleased to have this opportunity to publicly acknowledge their outstanding achievements,†Baker said.
The Student Academic Services Center’s mission is to “enhance the academic performance of all students at Indiana State University.â€Â
The center provides students at with various scholarly assistance programs such as tutoring, mentoring, academic advisement and disability assistance. The center’s staff also counsels Academic Opportunity Program students and open preference students and services as secondary advisers for varsity student-athletes as well as 21st Century Scholars and Student Support Services participants.
