ISU offers Crisis Intervention Training and Certification Program

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Wabash Valley healthcare, emergency services, disaster workers and school personnel are invited to learn crisis intervention techniques to help their colleagues and others following a traumatic event during a conference Jan. 24 and 25 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m at the Landsbaum Center for Health Education.

“CISM: Group Crisis Intervention Training Program” will prepare participants in understanding a wide range of crisis intervention tactics that can be utilized in hospitals, schools and the community.

The two-day training will be conducted by Carolyn Burns, an assistant professor of nursing at Indiana State University, who has spent nearly 20 years responding to traumatic events ranging from natural disasters to plane crashes and military incidents. Burn most recently conducted a similar training session for the New Zealand Airline Pilots Association in Auckland.

The program is open to Wabash Valley physicians, nurses, emergency services and disaster workers, safety, military and school system personnel, psychologists, social workers and counselors. Space is limited to the first 150 registrants. Deadline to register is Jan. 10, 2008. Continuing Education credits will be awarded upon completion of the program and written evaluation.

Cost to attend the program is $65 and includes all materials. The program is sponsored by the Indiana State University College of Nursing, Health and Human Performance and Hamilton Center.
