Terre Haute, Ind. - Works by Brownsburg High School teacher Lori Taylor will be on display in the Turman Art Gallery April 16 -20 as part of the Spring Graduate Thesis Exhibition, celebrating several years of artistic work and research at Indiana State University.

Originally from Terre Haute, Taylor received her bachelor's degree in art education from Indiana State and will receive a master's degree in painting. Her current body of work deals with the grieving process, and has resulted in paintings that are rich explorations of the forms of trees. It was through painting that the artist was able to find the strength to cope with the loss of her mother to cancer several years ago.

Always aware of the great beauty of nature, and fascinated from a young age with the form of trees, she began to incorporate them in her art as a way of studying the positive and negative spaces and forms that their complicated branches created. The trees came to have a special significance as she began to compare their branches to her own life. In her emotions and beliefs and life events she found the same kind of winding and contorted pathways as those of branches on trees. It is her hope that viewers will be able to engage with them in a way that will allow them to tap into their own emotions and experiences.

Taylor resides in Brownsburg and teaches at Brownsburg High School.

A reception honoring Taylor is scheduled for Friday, April 20, from 5-7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
